I have never been to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park before – I can’t imagine why, it is just my kind of venue. But recently I was lucky enough to go with a small party to have a tour round.
Nestled in the hills of a former stately home just a short hop from Wakefield, the park has recently celebrated its 40th Birthday. Visiting is completely free but you do have to pay for parking, which is around £11 for the day. Alongside all the amazing sculptures set in the grounds there are also three indoor exhibition spaces, a great restaurant and an amazing gift shop. Don’t forget to check out the jewellery.
Seeing a Henry Moore in the context that the artist himself loved is very inspiring. I was struck by the sheer variety of work from artists like Chiharu Shiota, Ai Wei Wei, Giuseppe Penone, Anthony Caro, Barbara Hepworth, Lynn Chadwick, James Turrell and, my personal favourite, Sophie Ryder.
Here is a little slide show for you.
I can’t wait to go back and I urge you all to visit if you get the chance.
